America is Doomed.....

OK, I don't mean that in the sense “...if Bush is re-elected..”

No, this goes deeper than the election.....

Yesterday, I saw an “Washington Power Players“ Edition of Jeopardy (It may have been a re-run from earlier in the season).  The players were Tim Russert (Host of NBC's Meet the Press), Christie Todd-Whitman (Fmr Governor of NJ & Fmr Secry of the EPA), and Tavis Smiley (Host of NPR's Tavis Smiley show).

The Final Jeopardy question was (paraphrased) “How many US Senators were there in 1958?“

Now, there are two Senators from each state, and presently, we have 50 states.  Hence, we currently have 100 Senators.

So, all one has to do to answer this, is to remember that Alaska & Hawaii became states in 1959, which means in 1958, we had two fewer states, which means 4 fewer Senators, and then sunbstract 4 from 100 to get 96.    That's it!

All three got it wrong!

Has mathematics education in the US declined so badly that the simple equation “100 - 4 = 96“  eludes three prominent and seemly intelligent people?

Or maybe three people just couldn't remember if Alaska and Hawaii became states just before or just after 1958?

Well, Tavis Smiley said "100" so he could have fallen into that category. My Ivy-League educated sister (born in 1960) said that would have been her answer, as she assumed Alaska & Hawaii became states much eariler.

Tim Russert said "98" so it's unclear if he miscounted the number of states added in 1959 or the number of senators per state.

Christie Todd Whitman said "46", so she seemed to get the 2 states times 2 senators part right, then just subtracted from the wrong starting point.

(Oh the whole, Whitman just kick butt on the show $21,000 to $3000 for each of the men. Since I've now watched two different episodes of Jeopardy's "Washington Power Players", and both times a Republican that I didn't like won (Tucker Carlson was the other), I'm gonna write this one up as a victory for New Jerseyians)

I'm just about finished reading HIS EXCELLENCY: GEORGE WASHINGTON. Historian Joe Ellis makes a comment to the effect that, since the creation of a two-party political system (which basically happened during Washington's presidency), being a person of character is more of a liability than an asset in politics.

WebReader,

I think we are going to be heading into a recession if not a depression. We have gone down hill since Bush was elected and things can only get worse from here! America is doomed! We needed a change this election. I am wondering what kind of crap(Remember Florida) has been slung into the mix that got him re elected? Looks like it was across the whole North America this time around. I feel it had to look close to be a beliveable election! Dam we are Doomed!
Hacked vote is the sad truth I believe! I voted for Kerry I am sure my vote probably counted towards Bush.
