The Dumbest Christmas Tradition

Merry Christmas.

Attending midnight mass last night, (message delayed a bit due to technical difficulties) I was reminded of what is clearly one of the dumbest Christmas traditions practiced by many.   Many (probably most) Christians will display a nativity scene along with their Christmas decorations, and (here's the dumb part) a large number of them won't put the baby Jesus into the creche until Christmas morning.   "It's only logical" they protest.  "Jesus wasn't born until Christmas" --- Yeah, but where exactly is the logic in having a scene of Mary, Joseph and a bunch of shepherds looking adoringly at an empty manger?

# re: The Dumbest Christmas Tradition

Yep, and never mind the fact that Jesus couldn't be born in December given the Biblical description of the weather at the time of his birth. Late March -- early April is more like it.

Or... that the early Church observed Christmas on the 6th and 7th of January. Under Emperor Constantine (who erroneously thought to have been a Christian), to blend in with the then state religion---Sol Invictus---the Church moved Christmas to the day of the Natalis Invictus festival: December 25th, the day of winter solstice.

But, I guess, people who go to the "logical" extremes you point out, wouldn't know or care. Ignorance is bliss. :)

Hello!

What does everyone think of what is going on in Iraq?

By the way, I love that too!  Where did you get that at?

Bye, - Becky!
